“I went to Dr. King initially for the Zerona laser procedure because I was having trouble losing weight.  I’ve been on zoloft for a long time, and not only did it cause me to gain 20 lbs – it also made it impossible to lose.  With just 12 treatments over 4 weeks – I lost 15 lbs and 9 inches off my stomach and thighs.  And better than that, Dr. K also works with you on a nutrition plan to enhance the effects.  She is very kind and helpful, and her office is great!  I also now go to her for chiropractic as well.”

Meet Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful and All-Dried Up, the seven dwarves of menopause (named by Suzanne Somers in her book The Sexy Years).  These are just a few of symptoms many women deal with on a daily basis, the GOOD NEWS is you don’t have too!

With Bio-Identical Hormones, homeopathic, and body balancing with Dr. King you can feel GREAT again, with our 2 hour Nutritional & Hormone Evaluation.

What is Menopause?

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when the ovarian production of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone decline. The average age of menopause onset is fifty-one, plus or minus several years. Menopause is medically defined as the time in which a woman ceases to menstruate for the duration of 1 year. Although the definition properly describes the event, the process can begin up to 10-15 years earlier and is called perimenopause or pre-menopause and for many women this starts as early as age 35.

Long before a woman’s menstruation stops, she will begin to notice changes in her body. Over time, her periods will become shorter in length, some longer and more “clotty”, and she will notice a loss of energy, a decrease in strength, weight gain, sluggish metabolism, and a loss of libido. Her mood is altered and she may be more agitated, depressed, apathetic, and forgetful. While these are all symptoms of menopause, it is important to know that there is a bigger picture during this time your hormones are changing – you are experiencing the loss of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone and this occurs during perimenopause.

There is no way to stop menopause, it’s a natural cycle of life. Every woman will go through menopause and perimenopause at some point in her life. However, the difference is how you deal with this normal process. This imbalance in hormones is often accerlated and intensified by poor diet, poor nutrition and stress and can be balanced by correcting those areas we have control over.  Finding what is not balanced in your life and your body is what Dr. King can do for you. Natural bioidentical hormone therapy along with homeopathy and body balancing with nutrition and dietary changes will help you in an amazing way to manage and often eliminate the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.   Utilizing Dr. King’s expertise and our body scanning system we give you a new leash on life and bring your body back to that youthful energy you had in your 20’s as your hormones are balanced back out.

Menopause Symptoms

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Weight gain
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Irritability

Hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping and weight gain are the most common symptoms of hormonal imbalance as a woman ages.  Perimenopause weight gain is oftentimes misdiagnosed and is one of the first signs of hormonal imbalance, it’s the “I eat less and less and yet I still seem to gain weight feeling”. These signs of menopause or early menopause and related conditions are also connected to your stress levels, poor nutrition, lack of exercise and the environmental toxins your body is exposed to on a daily basis.

The Solution: Bioidentical Hormones for Menopause

Dr. King’s Nutritional & Lifestyle Renewed Health Programs uses only bioidentical hormones, which are identical to the body’s natural chemistry, in combination with nutrition (homeopathy, herbs, supplements, vitamins and dietary programs). Dr. King provides a natural treatment that helps women suffering from the symptoms of perimenopause and signs of menopause by using bioidentical hormones or natural hormones to enable you to enjoy life to its fullest!

Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All-Dried up. In her bestseller, “The Sexy Years” Suzanne Somers explains how, one by one, these symptomatic dwarfs took over her life and how bioidentical hormone therapy made them go away.

There are many benefits felt immediately upon using bioidentical hormones for menopause treatment. The seven dwarfs, one-by-one, begin to depart. The hot flashes, the night sweats, the irritability, and the loss of energy and strength begin to subside. Your libido is restored and you begin to feel more control over your emotions. The term ‘menopausal’ will no longer define you and control your life, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of menopause. In combination these benefits have the long-term effect of improving your overall quality of life and it all starts with bioidentical hormones for menopause.

Beyond Menopause

Menopause is often dreaded by women due to the symptoms and a preconceived notion that it is a marker of old age. In reality, women often live into their high eighties and nineties, making menopause more of a half way point than anything else. Without menopause symptoms, women experience a huge relief of stress, allowing you to relax more and enjoy your life. Around 75% of women say that they were having more every day fun in their lives after the end of menopause symptoms. 93% of women claim an increase in independence as well.  This is not a time to dread, women should be able to easily pass through both perimenopause and menopause with high energy, balance, good mental clarity, and a great sex drive. We can do this by balancing your body, balancing your hormones and balancing your nutritional needs.  Talk with Dr. King today at skingdc@earthlink.net or 626-799-0557.

TRAVELING:

Thanksgiving is one of the travel times of the year. With so many of us on the road, delays are unavoidable and eating right can be difficult. What Dr. King advises her patients is to bring their own meals and/or snacks such as fruit (I personally like apples), a wrap sandwich, raw unsalted nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts), or packages of instant oatmeal, just in case you are stranded somewhere with limited dining venues.

EATING IS A BALANCING ACT:

So you splurged and cheated and ate foods that you normally would never eat; that doesn’t mean you have a license to eat whatever you want over the next six weeks. If it’s just one day of overeating, you can forgive yourself for it, even Dr. King has one bad day we all do we’re only human. Health experts recommend moving on, and being careful over the next few days of what you eat, and squeezing in enough exercise, could detoxification supplements, and/or our detoxification machine to counteract your overindulgence.

THANKSGIVING MEAL & YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:

The traditional Thanksgiving Day meal can be tough on our digestive systems, especially since we’ve navigated away from the original traditional “Pilgrim Meal” of lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables to a heavy, greasy, fried, and buttery foods. To help you through the maze of foods that will make your stomach groan, I offer you the following recommendations for a Thanksgiving Day that will leave you with a healthy, quiet and satisfied gut and you still get to enjoy a FABULOUS MEAL.

Preparation:

Keep your stress level as low as possible. If you are hosting the holiday, delegate, delegate, delegate! Make lists and throw out all signs of perfectionism. Anything that can be put off to next week, should be put off to next week. Get plenty of rest and sleep. Engage in light exercise for overall health and added stress relief.

Before the Main Event:

Don’t go to the Thanksgiving dinner hungry: we often eat faster and more when we are hungry – therefore eat a wholesome breakfast and lunch on the day to avoid overeating at dinner time.  I also recommend drinking plenty of water, water has 0 calories and fills up your stomach.

Main Ingredients:

The other key to a successful meal is the use of top quality ingredients. Choose wisely what foods to eat and you will be rewarded with a sense of physical well-being. In general, avoid anything that is fatty, creamy or fried, as foods with a high fat content may result in unpleasant digestive symptoms. Be cautious about your choice of drink as well, as alcohol and caffeine can both be irritating to your system. If you are in charge of dinner I suggest using whole, unrefined organic foods your body will feel satisfied faster due to high levels of nutrition and you can indulge a little more in some carb and sweet based foods because they are of a healthier nature.

Appetizers:

Think lean protein: shrimp, barbequed (not fried!) wings, and cheese. Reach for whole grain crackers, and raw fruits and vegetables.

Main Meal:

Thanksgiving dinner is not an all-you-can-eat buffet: Fill your plate half with vegetables, one quarter with a lean meat and the rest with a starch of your choice. Eat slowly and stop when you are full.

Choose white meat turkey, as dark meat has a higher fat content. Baked sweet potatoes are a better option than buttery mashed potatoes.

Side Dishes – watch your portion size: go for smaller portions. This way you can sample a few different “treat” items is so desired without the guilt. Moderation is always the key.

YOU MAY ASK WHAT DOES DR. KING EAT???? Very well, here’s my plate, I love turkey so yes I do have my serving of turkey mostly white meat.  I have a small amount of stuffing (yes this is my cheat, because I do love the taste), and the rest of my plate is fresh salads and vegetables which my Mom (who hosts our Thanksgiving) graciously makes sure we have plenty of), I also have a small bowl of yams for my dessert (yes, dessert they’re sweet and with a little bit of agave nectar and butter I think they beat out pie).  Typically I snack on veggies with a little dip and salmon log (this is pretty great stuff) on some whole grain unprocessed crackers as an appetizer which really acts as a lunch as a prelude to my meal.

Dessert:

Enjoy the inside of pie! Eating healthy does not have to mean total deprivation. Have a piece of pumpkin or apple pie, but only eat the filling. In this way, you will avoid the hard-on-the-system crust.

TO SUM UP:

That’s the biggest mistake people make when faced with a table full of food. They adopt an “all-you-can-eat” mentality and take a little bit of everything.  Help yourself to smaller servings. Be aware that a single three-ounce serving of meat is the same size as a deck of playing cards. For fruits and vegetables, one medium-sized fruit or a cooked cup equals one serving. Select nutrient-rich and lower- calorie fare first so you will feel full faster.

Avoid stuffing yourself, eat until your hunger is satisfied. Pace yourself and wait a few minutes before deciding to get up for a second helping.  Plus if you have friends and family to visit over the long holiday weekend, you don’t want to loosen that belt buckle just yet. Take time to savor your food and give your body time to digest. Only the turkey should be stuffed at one sitting.

Get moving. Stay active over the holidays. Along with eating healthy, keeping fit is great for the mind and body, also it’s a great way to connect with family. Go outside and play basketball with the family, or take long walks together. Staying active will boost your metabolism, helping you to burn more calories. Try to maintain a regular exercise regiment of cardio- and strength-training during this busy time. Even if you’re only working out once or twice a week, it’s better than nothing. The goal is to keep your weight at the same level come the New Year.

All my best for a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday,

Our office will be closed 11/26-11/29 for the Holiday and will re-open 11/30/2009 (Mo) at 12:00pm.  We will be open regular hours before and after the Holiday.

Enjoy your family and all the great food,

Dr. Stephanie King

SIP OOLONG TEA–Research suggests that people with mild exzema who drink oolong tea 3 times a day may show improvement in itching and other symptoms.

HORSE CHESTNUT–for varicose veins, try horse chestnut, an herbal extract that’s been shown in studies to strengthen veins and reduce swelling.

GO FISH–if you suffer from dry eyes up your seafood intake. Salmon, sardines, and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids, which the body uses to produce tears, among other things. Research suggests that people who consume higher amounts of these fats are less likely to have dry eyes.

POP A PROBIOTIC–to keep yeast infections at bay, head for the vitamin aisle.  Supplementing with a good high quality probiotic helps to restore the balance of bacteria living in the female genital tract and will inhibit the growth of yeast in women with recurrent infections. Foods such as kefir and yogurt also contain these cultures although in much smaller amounts.

GET A MASSAGE–certain trigger points, spots of tension in musculoskeletal tissue can cause back pain, headaches & various joint ailments.  Reduce these areas of stress with regular massages by a qualified massage therapist.

GARLIC–adding raw or lightly cooked garlic and onions to your meals may help keep you healthy this winter.  Both foods appear to possess antiviral and antibacterial properties and are believed to boost immunity.

EAT AVOCADOS–for dry skin, incorporate more avocados into your diet.  They’re rich in monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, both of which promote healthy skin.  They are great on salads, which is another way to get good phytonutrients and fiber into your diet.

WATCH YOUR CARBS–trying to reduce belly fat? Pay attention to your carbohydrate intake and avoid artificial sweeteners. Sugary snacks and other refined carbs spike blood sugar and cause pounds to settle in your middle.  Choose protein, whole unprocessed unrefined grains, nuts, and vegetables instead.

ARM YOURSELF WITH ARNICA–homeopathic creams, gels, and ointments that contain arnica, a flower similar to the daisy, have long been used to relieve swelling and bruising.

GET YOUR DAILY D–your vitamin D level which can be checked with a simple blood test is as least as important as calcium for building strong bones, and most American’s DON’T get enough.  Get a minimum of 1000IU of Vitamin D3 per day.

EAT BROCCOLI–for healthy gums, put this green vegetable on your grocery list.  It’s an excellent course of vitamin C and provides calcium as well, both of which have been linked to lower rates of periodontal disease.

GREEN TEA–hot or iced, green tea can help rev up your workout.  Its catechins, antioxidants, and caffeine help increase the metabolic generation of heat.  Drink a cup about 10 minutes before exercising.

MORE TRANSFORMATIONS FROM DR. KING….

I came to Dr. King for the Zerona Laser and I realized she also did a dietary evaluation along with the Zerona program.  Not only did I lose weight with the Zerona Program, she also put me on supplements & formulas for being out balance hormonally which was causing not only my weight issues but headaches for 10 years.  Within 3 days of starting her formulas my headaches were completely gone and now I’ve noticed my periods have improved. My body feels so much better, more energy no fatigue.  I came for the Zerona which is amazing and works, but Dr. King’s nutritional program in conjunction is the best I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to feel and look amazing.  I had no idea that these areas could even be fixed.  Thank you Dr. King.” Heidi R

“As a patient of Dr. King, my health has been steadily improving, what I discovered is that Dr. King is a true health care provider with many unique ways of helping her patients.  I went on a closely monitored nutritional program expecting a diet but finding a real lifestyle change.  I’ve found more energy and health and each week improvements keep coming.  I highly recommend a visit to Dr. King and her wonderful staff.” Linda C

Since ZERONA laser came to the market many people have compared the results Liposuction and ZERONA procedures. In looking at the differences and results for patients interested in fat loss and body contouring it is important to look at the process of both procedures.

Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Fat removal is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and thus result in an improved body contour. While it is proven to be effective, it also comes with its down sides, mainly in the form of recovery time and cost.

Liposuction is an invasive procedure, so it comes with pain, discomfort, and possible risks. Typical side effects include swelling, bruising, discomfort, minor pain, and reduced mobility. Limited mobility for a few days to a few weeks depending on number of areas you treat surgically, as well as long terms risks can be permenant scarring, lumps, pumps lose skin and sensory loss.  It may even take several months after the procedure for swelling to subside and for you to full recover from liposuction. Depending on how many areas you’d like treated, liposuction can range from about 2K – 10K for the procedure.

While liposuction does a good job of removing excess fat often times patients are left with excess skin that will need another procedure for removal.

ZERONA on the other hand is less expensive, non-invasive, risk free, and pain free!

The ZERONA lasers are directed to the targeted areas on the body for 40 minute sessions (6 sessions in 2 weeks is common, but if you’d like to lose additional inches many people do up to 12 sessions per area). There will be no pain or recovery time, you can do this on your lunch and go right back to work and no one would even know you had a ZERONA laser session, how amazing is that? Many patients have reported to have lost anywhere from 3-9 inches after the two weeks of treatment.

The cost for the ZERONA procedure ranges from about 2K – 3K and you are able to cover multiple areas at one time rather then just one at a time like liposuction. Overall, if you’re scared to go under the knife, and want something easy, effective, and affordable you should look into ZERONA.

To learn more about the ZERONA procedure go to www.dedicatedtohealth.com.  or email skingdc@dedicatedtohealth.com directly and talk with Dr King, the Zerona Laser Expert.  If you need to lose many inches of fat in a number of different areas on the body take a look at Dr. King’s Zerona Lifestyle Program with her comprehensive computerized nutritional approach combined with laser a safe and natural approach to change your body and kickstart your fat loss with out harm or side-effects.

  • k0550466Avoid training when you are tired; you should be strong and ready to exercise.
  • Increase the amount of carbohydrate you consume during periods of heavy  training.
  • Match increases in training intensity or frequency with increases in resting. (Rest is how the body regenerates.)
  • Precede any increase in training load with an increase in strengthening.
  • Treat even seemingly minor injuries very carefully to prevent them from becoming a big problem. (This means going to your chiropractor, seeing your massage therapist right away before the injury becomes chronic.)
  • If you experience pain when training, stop your training session immediately. (dull achy pains are usually sore muscle, but a “sharp” pain means there may be a major injury that needs to be treated ASAP)
  • Never train hard if you are stiff from the previous training session. (Hot steam showers, jacuzzi, massage, stretching, chiropractic adjustment are all good ways to treat your body instead).
  • Pay attention to hydration and nutrition (water before exercise, electrolyte drink during exercise and water after exercise).
  • Use appropriate training surfaces.
  • Check that training and competition areas are clear of hazards.
  • Check that equipment is appropriate and safe to use.
  • Introduce new activities gradually and make sure you are clear on how to perform them safely.
  • Allow lots of time for warming up before your workout/activity and cooling off after your workout/activity (make sure to stretch after your activity that’s the best way to prevent injuries and protect your joints).
  • Review training and competition courses beforehand.
  • Train on different sources, using the right footwear.
  • Shower and change immediately after the cool-down phase (after exercise).
  • Stay away from potentially infectious areas when training or competing very hard.
  • Monitor daily for signs of fatigue; if in doubt, ease off your workouts for a day or two.
  • Get regular massages to keep muscles loose and blood circulating properly.
  • Most importantly get out there and get moving–start a routine whether it be simply walking each day for 20 minutes, or swimming at your local YMCA.
  • Take a Yoga class or try Pilates do something to get your body doing something different each day and you will feel energized and your mind will feel less stressed.

  • All my best for great health, Dr. Stephanie King…………………………….

WOW, what a side benefit to the fat melting Zerona Laser that has been reducing waistlines by 1-2 sizes taking anywhere from 2-6 inches off your stomach, hips & thighs while simply taking a much needed relaxing nap or reading a book.

McKinney, TX May 5, 2009 – Erchonia Medical, the global leader in low level laser

zerona_cf_clipped

healthcare applications, announces today that its newest laser for body sculpting, Zerona, has been clinically shown to reduce the levels of the hunger-hormone, leptin, and lipoprotein (LDL). A 22 participant pilot study revealed that Zerona not only reduced circumferential inches following a two week treatment phase, but also lowered all patients’ leptin levels and reduced low-density lipoprotein numbers in over 50% of the participants in just two weeks.

Although Zerona is already positioned ahead of its competitors in terms of its ability to non-invasively, safely and effectively reduce an average of 3.64 inches around the waist, hips and thighs, this new data could have beneficial results for many patients struggling with overeating. Suppressing the very hormones that may cause individuals to be overweight or obese can further aid Zerona patients with their weight-loss goals.

Erchonia President, Steve Shanks, comments, “For most devices, the patient comes in, receives the treatment and leaves; the reason why that person was overweight or obese to begin with is not addressed. By suppressing the hunger-hormone leptin, patients’ appetites can be lessened helping them modify their diets and establish portion control going forward.”

In addition to reducing inches, suppressing hunger and reducing LDL levels, Zerona is also unique because it does not destroy fat tissue, unlike the majority of other devices on the market. Zerona promote a biological cascade within the cell provoking the formation of tiny pore or opening within the protective barrier of the cell. Then, stored fatty material leaves the cell, causing it to collapse safely.”

rib2As all of you know, I am on the offensive when it comes to preventing disease.  I came across this great article written by Marisa Weiss, MD, oncologist and president of the nonprofit Breastcancer.org and thought I would pass along some of the information that I thought was very good for reducing your risk and as Dr. Weiss puts it “many of your daily activities can be building blocks for good breast health.”

Cut your chemical exposure. Found in countless items, especially those made with plastic, certain chemicals appear to interfere with your body’s hormonal balance and could harm breast health.  “Breast tissue is hypersentitive to hormonal activity; even a little interference can hae an impact over time,” explains Weiss. To reduce your exposure to chemicals such as bisphenol A and phthalates (discussed in many of Dr. King’s previous blog’s on cancer prevention) Weiss recommends using products that are made from glass, ceramic, or stainless steel whenever possible.

Pick your produce carefully. “A plant-based diet is best for breast cancer prevention”, say Weiss. (it is so great to hear my MD Collegues also recommend the plant-based diet that I encourage my patients to utilize during my nutrition sessions, as you can read in many of my “Dr. King” blog’s I highly motivate my patients to increase their vegetable intake throughout the day) Aim for five to nine daily servings of fruits and vegetables (preferably vegetables, stick to 2 max of fruits) and try to stay away from produce that’s heavily sprayed with pesticides and herbicides (chemicals that can disrupt normal cell growth and may increase the risk of breast cancer). Weiss recommends buying organic produce as often as you can, as well as checking the Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides (at foodnews.org) for a list of fruits and veggies with the highest pesticide load.

Be mindful with meat. Eating red meat just once a week (or less) may curb your breast cancer risk, says Weiss.  “Beef can contain compounds that are unhealthy for breast tissue, such as hormones given to most cattle to accelerate their growth.” she explains.  Most conventionally raised cattle (along with poultry and pigs) are treated with antibiotics and fed crops grown with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides which end up in their meat and thus increase your chemical exposure when you eat it.  So as much as possible choose organic, hormone free meat.

Fine tune your diet. Certain foods and nutrients may help fend off breast cancer, according to recent research.  New research suggest eating apples may thwart the development of breast tumors.  And in recent studies scientist discovered that Vitamin D3 (best taken in supplement form, at a minimum does of 1000iu) could help slow the growth of breast cancer cells.  Loading up on cruciferous vegetables may also help keep breast tissue healthy says Weiss.

Watch your weight. “Staying at a healthy weight is essential for guarding against breast cancer,” says Weiss.  Recent research supports the long-established link between postmenopausal breast cancer and obesity.  In a study of 5,450 women, those with the highest insulin levels (associated with obesity) were more then twice as likely to develop breast cancer as those with the lowest insulin levels.

A special Note from Dr. King. As many of you recognize, several of these suggestions are items I discuss with my nutrition patients on a regular basis.  If you are looking for a lifestyle change, to improve your health and move towards a path of renewed health and overall disease prevention and would like to discuss a plan of action toward that path please don’t hesitate to set up a one-on-one consult with Dr. King.  And to my patients who are on that journey, I wish you the best to continued great health.
